Destination Spa Group “Steps Up to Nutrition” for National Nutrition Month® 2006

February 20, 2006 – In an effort to “Step Up to Nutrition”, Destination Spas from around the world have joined forces to promote National Nutrition Month 2006. In keeping with the American Dietetic Association’s theme, Destination Spa Group (DSG) members are offering creative new cooking classes, special fitness activities and interactive education sessions throughout the month of March. These featured activities complement the life enhancing program exclusively featured at Destination Spas.

Step 1 – Starting March 1st, Destination Spa Group and all of its member spas will provide guests with a “Nutrition Resource List”. This valuable resource was developed by registered dietitians and nutritionists from the DSG spas. Our spa nutrition experts have found these books and websites to be great references full of sound nutritional information.

Step 2 – Destination Spa Group and its member spas will be running a “Destination Spa Lifestyle Recipe” contest throughout the month. Contestants will be asked to submit a recipe that best exemplifies Destination Spa Lifestyle Cuisine. The best recipes will be posted on the DSG website and the winner awarded a cookbook from one of the Destination Spas.

Step 3 – Each week, a Nutrition Education class will be offered at select DSG spa locations. The class will highlight the key messages for National Nutrition Month.

  • The food and physical activity choices made today - and everyday - affect your health and how you feel today and in the future. Eating right and being physically active are keys to a healthy lifestyle.
  • Make smart choices from every food group. Give your body the balanced nutrition it needs by eating a variety of nutrient-packed foods every day. Just be sure to stay within your daily calorie needs. Get the most nutrition out of your calories.
  • Choose the most nutritionally rich foods you can from each food group each day - those packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients but lower in calories.
  • Find your balance between food and physical activity. Regular physical activity is important for your overall health and fitness plus it helps control body weight, promotes a feeling of well-being and reduces the risk of chronic diseases.

Step 4 – During the month of March, DSG spas will feature a “Step up to Nutrition” fitness class. Examples include Step & Sculpt, Stepping 101, Funky Step and Two-Step. Fitness and nutrition staff will be available to answer nutrition questions and provide nutrition information at these designated classes.

Step 5 – Several special classes and offerings are taking place at Destination Spas during the month of March, highlighting Destination Spa Lifestyle Cuisine & National Nutrition Month:

  • Lake Austin Spa Resort: The “Culinary Experience” program includes a Daily Two-Hour Cooking Class, Welcome Reception with Featured Guest Chef, Boat, Hike and Breakfast, Campfire Cookouts with Local Musicians, Champagne and Hors D’ Oeuvres Sunset Boat Cruises, Wine and Cheese Pairings, Entertaining Tips, Healthy Gourmet Picnics, Tours of Hill Country Organic Farms, Shopping Tour of the New 80,000-Square Foot Signature Whole Foods Market, All About Herbs with Trisha Shirey, Director of Flora and Fauna, Organic Garden Tour and Tea Time, Remodeled Recipes and The Chocolate Mystique with Terry Shaw, Lake Austin Spa Resort’s own Registered Dietitian.
  • Cal-A-Vie: “The Future Vision of Nutrition”, will debut at Cal-A-Vie in March. The interactive class will discuss nutrients from foods that support vision as well as overall health. Additionally, the new Cal-A-Vie cookbook will be revealed in March.
  • Rancho La Puerta: The week of March 26, Rancho La Puerta will be hosting Luna Rose for a specialty week of The Joy of Herbs. The week will include the following sessions: Herbal Healing in a Changing World, Gourmet Cooking with Fresh Herbs, Kitchen Medicine: 10 Super Foods That Can Save Your Life, Discovering the Fountain of Youth, and Aromatherapy at Tres Estrellas with Anita Boen: A Walk on the Wild Side.
  • Red Mountain Spa: Cooking demonstrations will be offered daily in March, emphasizing Southwestern Cuisine: Simple Baking, Soups, Salads, & Appetizers, Spicing Up Your Grains. The School of Adventure Cuisine will run March 20-23 and The Detoxification Program will be offered twice: March 12-19 and 19-26.
  • The Oaks at Ojai: The week of March 10-17, the Oaks will offer “Food for Thought”. Each day, experts on nutrition, eating habits and spa cuisine will help guests cook up great ideas for healthy living.
  • The Heartland Spa: Throughout the month of March, all guests will receive a nutrition pocket pal that contains the nutrition and food pyramid information and healthy cooking tips. Additionally, the employees are having a "healthy cook-off".

Collectively, these five steps meet Destination Spa Group® and ADA’s National Nutrition Month® campaign goals, which are very similar – to educate the public about healthy living. Log on to www.destinationspas.com or www.eatright.org (ADA’s website) for more details on the NNM campaign.

Destination Spas are dedicated solely to providing access to and educating people about the benefits of physical activity, nutritious eating, mind-body connections and therapeutic benefits of massage and body treatments. DSG is an organization of Destination Spas focused on educating the public about Destination Spas. Member spas must meet specific criteria for membership and be committed to providing a health renewing experience.

You can clean your home, fruits, vegetables and meats with the same 'Aqueous Ozone' that spas and other companies use. Tersano's ‘Aqueous Ozone’ Cleaning Systemt is the world's most effective chemical-free cleaner. ‘Aqueous Ozone’ quickly oxidizes (kills) viruses and bacteria (including E.coli, Salmonella, MRSA, C-Difficil), mold, mildew and other contaminants on any item or surface - from toilets to bedspreads - before changing safely back into water and oxygen. ‘Aqueous Ozone’ is 3000 times faster and 50% more powerful than bleach and chlorine-based cleaners. It is 100% chemical free - no toxins, carcinogens or chemical residue - and safe for babies, pets and people with sensitive skin or those with strong reactions to normal cleaners. ‘Aqueous Ozone’ has long been used in water treatment, food sterilization and medical therapies for its remarkable anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. It sounds too good to be true, but the data show how effective the system works.
I'm a believer.
