The Spa Industry Unites in the Fight Against Cancer

LEXINGTON, Ky. - August 29, 2007 - With some 100 million spa-goers around the world, members of the International SPA Association touch so many lives on a daily basis. Though, the spa experience goes deeper than treatments and products. Spa professionals are using their talents to reach out to cancer patients and survivors.

"The spa is a wonderful place of refuge for people dealing with the hardships of cancer," said ISPA President Lynne McNees. "From hosting retreats to administering hands-on programs and creating at-home products, spa professionals are taking the wellness benefits of the spa experience directly to those who need it most. By raising awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness month, as well as throughout the year, ISPA members are truly making a difference."

A sampling of ISPA members' offerings includes:

In California, Spa Gregorie's "Greet the Day" program includes the Spa Day Retreat, Chemo Comfort-Touch and Oncology Massage. Chemo Comfort-Touch is a program in which massage therapists and aestheticians work as a team with oncology staff to provide comfort-oriented foot and hand massage at infusion centers during patients' chemotherapy treatments. Held at Hoag Cancer Center in Newport Beach, Oncology Massage is an education program that prepares therapists to address the bodywork adjustments required during and after cancer treatment.

New York's Mohonk Mountain House has taken a step forward in caring for breast cancer survivors by training their technicians how to massage certain areas of the body that may require special attention following diagnosis, surgery or other treatment. Titled, "Treating Cancer and Life-Threatening Illness in the Spa Setting," the program was initiated based on therapists' requests to learn more and understand how to better care for guests who were dealing with chronic illness, oncology treatments and post surgery issues.

San Francisco's Nob Hill Spa will hold two seminars in October focusing on alternative breast cancer therapies. "Treatable & Beatable" will be conducted by a breast cancer survivor, and "Fighting Cancer from Within" will be led by author and physician Marty Rossman, M.D.

Turtle Cove Spa at Mountain Harbor Resort in Arkansas is the Official Spa Partner with Energizer Corporation for Little Rock's Race for the Cure in October. Therapists will offer services at the race site, while at the spa, the rest of the staff will be wearing the official "Keep Going" Race for the Cure T-shirts. Throughout October, the spa will be decorated with posters, and brochures will be available supporting the efforts for early breast cancer detection.

The staff of Rizzieri Salons and Spas in New Jersey created a "Beauty Retreat for Woman Fighting Cancer." The retreats include complimentary, mini- hair and spa services with lessons on how to approach any beauty challenge the women may have. Rizzieri also partnered with an area hospital to help facilitate the events.

Nebraska product line Gilden Tree offers a Breast Cancer Awareness Gift set year round - with a percentage of profits donated to the American Breast Cancer Society. In addition, they donate robes embroidered with the pink ribbon symbol to various fundraising efforts. They also give their moisturizing products to those who have skin problems as a result of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

Employees of Illinois-based Action Bag took part in "Lee's Wear Jeans to Work for Breast Cancer" and also wore pink with donations going to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. They sponsored an employee in a cancer walk in Chicago by holding a raffle and selling donated candles. Action Bag also looks for new Breast Cancer Awareness items for their fall catalog that will help spas promote the cause.
