Prenatal and Postnatal Massage - Tea Garden Springs wishes to inform you
about the prenatal and postnatal massages they offer. Several of their
practitioners provide this service, and all are well-trained and certified
to practice this highly specialized type of massage.
Many considerations must be addressed in prenatal bodywork, and each
trimester of the pregnancy presents a unique set of challenges. In the
first trimester the risk of miscarriage is the highest, prompting the
practitioner to avoid abdominal massage altogether, as well as any undue
pressure on the endocrine gland reflex points. The mother may lie in any
position that she finds relaxing: supine, prone, or side-lying. Then the
practitioner administers a general circulatory massage in the Swedish
style to help alleviate the bodys tensions. Kegel and abdominal
strengthening exercises are introduced, as are diaphragmatic breathing
techniques. At this point the prenatal practitioners can also provide
the mother with valuable information relating to pregnancy along with
personal coaching on relaxation techniques, on how to better attune to
the feminine energy of pregnancy to better accept the radical bodily changes
under way and in lending the mother emotional support and supportive preparation
to her for a birth that is as natural as possible.
During the second trimester, the mother receives her massage in the side-lying,
semi-reclining, or 3/4 position, with pillows used as a comfort aid. Now
light abdominal work may begin, along with Connective Tissue and Swedish
massage, though a sharp eye is always kept on any contraindications such
as varicosities. In general, rest assured that Tea Garden Springs' pre-natal
massages always stay on "the pleasure side of pain" so the fetus
will not get flooded with the mothers stress hormones. The practitioners
pay great attention to this, and have the mother use a red, yellow, and
green light code to facilitate the communication of any pain. Meanwhile,
the bodywork focuses more and more on supporting pelvic alignment, as
well as careful ligament work around the diaphragm, intercostals, adductors,
and of course, the growing uterus. More coaching is also provided on breathing
relaxation techniques, pelvic tilts and kegel exercises, especially as
the mother enters her third trimester. During these final months of pregnancy,
the prenatal massage practitioners address the specific areas of stress
the mother reports, which ususally involve the spine, sacrum, glutei,
and uterine ligament strains. At this point a weekly prenatal massage
helps immeasurably in alleviating any discomfort a mother may feel, and
the sessions help her get more and more in touch with the feminine wisdom
within, centering and opening her to the miraculous event of birth that
is about to occur.
Overall, the numerous benefits of prenatal massage have a positive synergistic
effect on the mothers health. The massage increases circulation,
accelerating the flow of nutrients to both mother and child. The massage
relieves the physical discomforts of pregnancy such as back, shoulder,
and neck pain, and edema and fatigue. This bodywork also minimizes the
stress on the weight bearing joints of the hips, pelvis, knees and ankles.
And studies have shown that serial massage helps relax pregnant women
to such an extent that it reduces their tension during labor.
Postnatal massages can begin a few weeks after the birth to aid the mothers
healing and ease postpartum stress, allowing the body to recuperate quickly
from the rigors of labor. As this happens the bodywork focuses more and
more on the pelvic girdle, particularly the abdominal area, helping to
restore vital energy and expedite the realignment of the organs to their
pre-pregnancy state. Serial postnatal massages also foster a deeper level
of relaxation in the mother, which can only strengthen the connection
to herself, her baby, and her partner.
The ultimate goal of pre/postnatal massage is to empower and nurture
the Mother Wisdom within. Tea Garden Springs' practitioners feel very
blessed working with expectant mothers to expand their physical, emotional,
and spiritual well-being. The practitioners find this a uniquely rewarding
experience, and are here to help you through the entire birthing process.
