Practices: Intent upon providing recreation and renewal for guests,
Mohonk continues its 138-year-old commitment to environmental stewardship through
earth-friendly design features, an extensive recycling program, and green initiatives
that preserve the land and educate people. Ecologically-friendly approaches include: - A
geothermal heating and cooling system moderates the temperature of the 30,000-square-foot
spa using the constant temperature of the earth and provides an emission- and
noise-free alternative to traditional heating and cooling methods.
- A
green roof helps insulate the spa building, reduces energy use and runoff, and
provides a habitat for birds and butterflies, as well as a venue for yoga and
meditation.
- Before the Spa could be built, approximately 17,000 tons
of Shawangunk Ridge rock had to be excavated from the mountaintop to create space
for the new facility. More than 600 tons were recycled and used to
construct the interior and façade of the new wing.
- To help sustain
the surrounding land, Mohonk Mountain House has supported the revival of a century-old
farming tradition by providing land for the nearby Brook Farm Project. Vegetables
such as squash, beans, cucumbers, carrots, greens, tomatoes are grown in the organic
garden which supplies hotel guests with farm-to-table produce in season, as available.
- Mohonk
Mountain House has been honored by the United Nations Environment Programme.
- Its
golf course has been designated as a Cooperative Sanctuary by the
New York State Audubon
Society. - In 1980, Mohonk Consultations, Inc.
was founded to raise individuals awareness and understanding of local and
global ecological systems by sponsoring conferences at Mohonk Mountain House.
- Energy conservation measures such as changing the light bulbs in guest
rooms and public spaces has reduced Mohonks lighting load by 150,000 watts.
- Mohonk
employs an extensive composting program, which processes tons of consumer food
waste per month. When finished, the compost product is then used as fertilizer
in the Mohonk gardens, on the golf course, and at Brook Farm.
- Mohonks
commitment to protecting the land is also evident from the Smiley familys
transfer of approximately 5,300 acres to the Mohonk Trust in 1963. Now known as
the Mohonk Preserve, this was the first land trust established to protect the
environmentally-important Shawangunk Ridge and is now the largest privately sponsored
nature preserve in New York State. The Preserve continues to pursue its mission
of land protection and stewardship on the Shawangunk Ridge while providing environmental
education through school programs and conducting scientific research.
-
Nature and interpretive programs, such as walks, slide shows and lectures hosted
by Mohonks staff naturalist.
- Recycling program for paper, glass,
aluminum, trash, and soap.
- Recycling program for office computers,
batteries and fluorescent light bulbs.
- An Integrated Pest Management
system to reduce the use of pesticides on the grounds.
- Over 100 years
of record-keeping at the Mohonk Lake Cooperative Weather Station, in cooperation
with the Mohonk Preserve.
- Environmentally-friendly wastewater treatment
plant.
- Guest tours of wastewater treatment plant and composting operation.
- Garden
waste shredding and recycling as part of the compost operation.
- Use
of biodegradable laundry products and non-aerosol cleaning materials.
- Donation
of a regional headquarters for the Student Conservation Association, a national
organization dedicated to developing the conservation leaders of the future, and
the Daniel Smiley Research Center to the Mohonk Preserve.
