Stillwater
Spa at The
Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina
in Cambridge, Maryland Julie
Register visited
this resort and spa on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in April 2008
This
spring, my husband and I spent some time exploring the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake
Bay and ran across The Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Golf Resort, Spa and Marina
in Cambridge, Maryland. This four-diamond resort sits on 342 acres along the Choptank
River, and features 400 rooms and suites, five dining options, 150-slip marina,
multi-level indoor and outdoor swimming pools, 35,000 square feet of indoor and
outdoor function space, a fitness facility, a children's recreation center, the
championship 18-hole River Marsh Golf Course and (most importantly to me) the
18,000 square-foot Stillwater Spa. Unfortunately, it poured throughout our stay
so we didn't do any outdoor activities. We did, however, enjoy the fitness center
and the spa.
The
entrance to Stillwater Spa is from the main floor where there is a large water
feature and stairway to the rest of the spa on the second floor. There is also
an outside entrance for day guests.
Jeff and
I checked in at the softly lit reception desk at the top of the stairs and were
led through the retail boutique to our respective changing areas.
We
were about to have a Best Mate's Hot Shell Massage. I had particularly
looked forward to this treatment. Although I had known about PerfectSense's Lava
Shells, a relatively new self-heating massage tool, for over a year (I first saw
them at the 2006
ISPA Expo), this would be my first treatment with them.
The
Lava Shells are made from tiger clamshells harvested by
islanders in the Philippines. The shells are opened, cleaned and polished to remove
imperfections, then rejoined as one. They are then gently warmed with a self-heating
lava gel made from volcanic lava powder, kelp, sea salt and both purified
and salt waters. The final product is a natural massage tool that stays warm for
about an hour.
Our therapists showed us the shells and explained the upcoming
treatment with them which was similar to a hot stone massage.
Fortunately, Jeff mentioned he was allergic to mangoes, since the botanical massage
oil in this treatment contained green tea and mango. He was given a choice of
other aromatherapy oils to use in its place.
The therapists left the room,
and we climbed on the treatment tables. The therapists returned and began to massage
us using the warm, smooth tiger shells. The warmth from the shells penetrated
deep into the muscles to help relieve tension and stress. The treatment ended
with a hot oil scalp massage. We both found it very relaxing. As a complimentary
gift, we received a hot shell massage kit to use at home.
We stayed in room 3404, a spacious corner King Water View
Room that offered beautiful views of the Choptank River from one side of the L-shaped
balcony and of the golf course from the other. We found the signature pillow-top
Hyatt Grand Bed very comfortable. The room had a number of features and
amenities including a ceiling fan, marble bath (with bath salts!), robes, safe,
desk, armchair, TV and more. It also offered something new to me - the Yoga Away
program. This is an in-room, on-demand series of 9 yoga videos in three categories
- Workout, Stress Reduction and Finding Focus. Yoga Mats are available for delivery
to guest rooms through Housekeeping. A Turn Down Service offering a complimentary
11 minute program - "A Good Night from YogaAway" - is also available.
The Fitness Center
features 5 treadmills, 3 elliptical trainers, a Summit trainer, a lifecycle and
a recumbent cycle. All cardio equipment is fitted with its own LCD television.
The strength equipment features seated leg curl, seated chest press, lat pull
down and shoulder press. There are also dumb-bells up to 50 lbs, leg raise, ab
bench, weighted exercise balls and bars and Stayfit fitness balls. There are complementary
towels, ice water and fruit.
Complimentary Yoga classes are offered on Saturday
and Sunday. Private instruction and group class are available for an additional
fee.
In the Area
We enjoyed exploring
Cambridge, the county seat of Dorchester County founded in 1684. We had a fabulous
dinner at Bistro Poplar. While we ran out of time, I would have liked to visit
Nadina Cremes in nearby Vienna.
