Spa
Bellagio at Bellagio Las Vegas
Julie Register experienced this hotel spa
in Nevada February 2006
I took a little time out one evening while I was in Las
Vegas for the Day Spa Conference
and Expo to experience Spa Bellagio*. I had admired the fabulous fountain
show outside the Bellagio, one of The Strip's big attractions, on previous
visits but never been to the spa. The first thing you notice upon entering
is the lobby's ceiling. It is adorned with 2,000 hand-blown glass flowers
created by world-renowned artist, Dale Chihuly.

I stopped at the desk to ask directions to the spa. I
was to take an elevator just around the corner. Before I got to the
elevators, however, I was lured to another colorful exhibit. It was
Chinese New Year, and the Bellagio had a bigger-than-life display of
Chinese figures and structures, marigolds, and bamboo.
I entered the spa reception and checked in. From there,
I took another elevator to the women's changing room. I was given
a tour of the area and assigned a locker above which a TV was unobtrusively
perched.

I changed into my bathing suit and spent some time in
the wet area. I did the circuit through three warm-to-hot whirlpools,
a cold plunge pool, a large sauna and a eucalyptus steam room. I would
have stayed longer if there had been a place to sit. However, the
area had only four chairs and one chaise lounge. Other guests had
already staked their claims, so I went back to the locker room and
showered. The showers are generously-sized with a wall bathed with
continually changing colored light. I put on my robe and sandals and
wandered over to one of the well-stocked refreshment areas. There
was plenty to choose from - juices, lemon water, cucumber water, bananas,
apples and oranges. I helped myself to some lemon water and sat in
the small waiting area. This room was noisy and not particularly relaxing.
It had a large TV that almost covered one wall. Since the room was
right next to the vanity area, the sound of hair dryers filled the
air. It was hard to ignore, but I closed my eyes and tried.

A few minutes before the appointed treatment time, a locker
attendant collected me from the waiting room and escorted me down a very
long hallway to the Spa Tower and a large co-ed lounge. Had I known about
this room earlier, I would have asked to wait for my treatment there.
The subdued lighting and soothing sound of water made it a very relaxing
place to be.
A few minutes later, Serge, my massage therapist, came for me. He escorted
me down the hallway past a large, beautiful water feature (odd that it
could be heard from but not seen from the lounge) to my treatment room.
The first thing I noticed was the same kind of changing colored lights
I had seen in the shower were under the massage table. I was scheduled
for a LaStone Therapy Massage which Serge said was a massage using 50%
heated basalt stones to deliver the massage and 50% hands. It wasn't LaStone
Therapy in the "classical" sense. Cold stones were not used.
There was no energy work. However, the warm stones served as an accent
to an excellent massage that was deeply relaxing. Little touches like
a warm rolled towel under my neck and warm stones under my ankles made
it extra nice. Serge's 22 years of experience in Canada and the US was
evident. On the way back to the waiting room (not the nice lounge), Serge
told me the spa had about 60 treatment rooms. I was amazed it was not
more crowded. I also wondered how that small waiting room and seating-shy
wet area could accommodate a fully booked schedule.

According to Spa Bellagio, the architectural elements of the 65,000 square-foot
spa were based on the natural philosophies of Zen. Sleek, clean lines
combine with natural materials such as travertine, granite, bleached walnut
and onyx to balance a contemporary feel with the warmth of natural elements.
Honoring the origins of the word spa from the Latin words solus per aqua
(which means health by water), reflecting pools, water walls and illuminated
aqua-colored glass were used throughout. Accents of Nephrite Jade and
hand-blown glass also were incorporated into the décor. The spas
54 treatment rooms include 12 Skin Care Rooms with private showers, four
Ashiatsu and two Thai Massage Rooms, two Vichy Rooms, two Hydrotherapy
Rooms, a Watsu Room, an Aqua Room with a dry float treatment bed and four
Couples Rooms. The mens spa area features an outdoor relaxation
balcony overlooking the pool.
The salon had been recently expanded from 10 to 18 stylist stations. New
features included a Barber Room with Straight Razor Shaves using steamed
towels and Art of Shaving products, a waxing and facial room, and a Private
Mani/Pedi Room.
With group spa-ing on the rise for brides/bridesmaids, mother/daughter
excursions, and friends looking for a weekend getaway, several areas within
Spa & Salon Bellagio were designed with groups in mind. The Watsu
Room and secluded manicure/pedicure areas allow for beverages and food
to be served upon request.
The 6,000-square-foot Fitness Center overlooks the pool
and Mediterranean gardens. A separate check-in, a secure locker area for
small items, and state-of-the-art treadmills, bikes, elliptical trainers
and Pilates equipment are among the new amenities. Flat-screen televisions
are located within mirrored walls. The Bamboo Studio, a 1,000-square-foot
exercise room complete with bamboo flooring, is designed for classes ranging
from Pilates and kickboxing to yoga and individual activities.
The Spa Tower also features 928 rooms and suites, an additional 60,000
square feet of meeting and convention space including an exhibition kitchen,
the restaurant Sensi and Jean-Philippe Pâtisserie, a French pastry
shop.
