| Nice Touch! Awards 2002 |
| I visited many spas in 2002 and enjoyed them all. Every once in a while, I ran across something that made the visit extra special, something extraordinary - a unique or outstanding treatment, a gesture, a touch, a program, or a feature of the facility. To these spas, I present the Second Annual Nice Touch! Award from Julie Register. Here are those spas in the order I visited them: |
1) The Spa at The
Westin Turnberry Resort, Scotland
Pleasant pool area is a great place to relax, especially when the weather is not ideal for outdoor activities. Unique co-ed sauna with one wall of glass makes the experience uplifting. Two relaxation rooms encourage you to stay and rest after treatments. Good selection of E'SPA retail products including my favorite aromatherapy candles and body scrubs. Nice touch!
|
2) One Spa at The Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh, Scotland
Some of the unique state-of-the-art features are: Access to spa areas with Swatch wristband passed over a keypad; pool area with individual whirlpool baths that can be programmed with an array of aromas; rooftop hydropool; fantastic thermal suite; a large variety of spa treatment rooms including Thai massage, Serail Mud, and a Hammam; and fitness equipment that can be programmed for you by a personal trainer. Treatments can be scheduled by time and you and your therapist can decide what would be best to do in the time allotted. E'SPA products used in treatments. This spa would be the initial model for any spa facility I would want to build. My favorite hotel/day spa this year. Nice touch!
|
3) LeSport, The Body Holiday on the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia, West Indies
An all-inclusive beach resort that includes food, drinks, water sports, golf, and two spa treatments per day. The Oasis spa sits high on a hill above the rest of the resort and offers a wide variety of treatments, a dietician, and mind/body classes such as meditation, yoga, tai chi, and a personal trainer. This is a resort spa where it is possible to have a destination spa experience. Nice Touch!
|
4) The Spa at Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina
Unique subterranean spa with cave-like pool area, waterfalls, lap pool, mineral pool, underwater music, and outdoor whirlpool overlooking the golf course and mountains beyond. Water fountains are located in each treatment room hall and can be softly heard in the rooms. Treatment rooms offer individual control of music, light, and temperature and include heat lamps over massage tables. My favorite resort spa this year. Nice touch!
|
5) The Spa Turf Valley at Turf Valley Resort & Conference Center in Ellicott City, Maryland
This spa deserves a special mention for "extras" during the spa services I had. The esthetician never left the room during the facial. While three different masks set up, she used the time to "press" my legs, apply warm oil to my hair and massage my scalp, and massage my hands. During a body polish, the therapist drizzled warm oil in front of her hand as she rubbed it along my body. The sensation was simultaneous warmth and light pressure. Contrasting hot/cold water with a hand-held hose and Vichy shower also felt great. Nice touch!
|
6) Bersalon Spa at Sonesta Beach Resort Bermuda
While the Bersalon Spa does not have couple's treatments on the menu, they had no problem creating a romantic spa experience on a secluded beach for me and my husband - massage for two in the open air, shaded by cliffs that provided privacy. We could hear the sound of waves crashing on the rocks in the background while enjoying an outstanding massage. The therapists were excellent. Nice touch!
|
7) Juvenex Spa in New York, New York
Unique women-only spa in Manhattan, open 24-hours-a-day / 7-days-a-week, offers a dry sauna igloo made of 17 tons of jade boulders imported from Korea, Japanese soaking tubs, a gem-shaped glass steam room, a
baked-clay detox room, authentic Korean body scrubs as well as European
treatments. Nice touch!
|
8) Ceiba Del Mar in Peurto Morelos, Mexico
In addition to lovely European spa facilities, this spa offers Temazcal on the beach to heal mind and body, a sweat lodge ritual inspired by the ancient Aztecs. The moving ceremony culminates in "rebirth" in the ocean. Nice Touch!
|
9) Thalasso Center at Paraiso de la Bonita in Peurto Morelos, Mexico
Well-equipped and nicely decorated thalasso spa on the Mayan Riviera - the first in Mexico and only the second in Latin America. Extensive facilities, well-trained therapists, and beautiful guest suites. Well worth the trip. Nice touch!
|
10) Canyon Ranch in the Berkshires
This destination spa sets the standard. Fitness classes, mind/body
classes, health and lifestyle education, integrative medical resources,
delicious and healthy cuisine - it's all here. And it's all
done very, very well. You can make a serious commitment to a healthier
way of life while feeling pampered and cared for. My favorite destination
spa this year. Nice touch!
