2010 Spa Reviews by Julie Register The
following are reviews of some of the spas Julie Register visited in 2010 |
It was 23°F the morning I left Philadelphia. I was happy to be heading to The Jewel Dunn’s River, an all-inclusive, adults-only beach resort near Ocho Rios, Jamaica. There I enjoyed temperatures in the 80's and sun in the mornings and early afternoons. I swam with dolphins, rode a bobsled, ziplined through the canopy, visited Dunn's River Falls and, of course, experienced Radiant Spa at the resort. Read about my experience.

My visit to The Spa on the Avenue in the White Marsh Town Center in Maryland was a classic example of a really nice treatment but a not-so-great spa experience. Read about my experience.

I took some time while I was attending the 2010 ISPA Conference and Expo at the Gaylord National Harbor to experience Relâche Spa, a sleek black and white spa overlooking the Potomac River with a view of the Washington Monument. Read about my experience there.

Recipe for a perfect Fall weekend: The Berkshires at their peak of color, an Iced Apple Cider Body Scrub and a S.P.A. (Signature Personalized Attention) massage at The Spa at Cranwell at Cranwell Resort, Spa and Golf Club in Lenox, Massachusetts. Read about my experience.

I spent a night at the Iberostar Quetzal on my way home from the Iberostar Cozumel. This all-inclusive resort on Playacar Beach is just a few minutes from Playa del Carmen on Mexico's Mayan Riviera. I made the most of the short time I had there, which included experiencing the Sensations Spa. Read about my experience.

I had an opportunity to snorkel the Columbia Reef Shallows while staying at the Iberostar Cozumel. It was outstanding! I also enjoyed my visits to the spa and "recovering" from my services at the beach under a thatched umbrella sipping a frozen, virgin, Piña Colada. Read about my experience.

 I
met Sara Damelio at the 2008 ISPA Expo where she introduced me to her Skincando line of products featuring organic and wild-crafted ingredients. Since then, I've followed her efforts to send Skincando's Combat-Ready Balm to our U.S. troops in Iraq to calm and sooth their incessant sand flea bites, sunburn and dry skin via the not-for-profit Operation Sand Flea.
When I realized that Sara was involved with The Still Point, a day spa in Takoma Park, Maryland just outside Washington, D.C., I knew I wanted to try it out. Read about my experience.

I had some time before the ISPA Media Event in Manhattan and decided to experience the intimate InkSpa at Ink48, a Kimpton Hotel that opened on July 1. Set in a former printing house, Ink48 is the first upscale hotel in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. Read about my experience.

Natural
Body Morningside, the original Natural Body location, was the first spa I ever
visited in Atlanta. That was in 1999. Eleven years later, I experienced their
12th location in Atlanta, Natural
Body Brookhaven. This spa is the first in the US to be awarded LEED Platimun
certification for their environmental stewardship. Read
about my experience.

We've
gotten into the habit of breaking our annual road trip to Georgia into two legs.
This year, we stopped over for a few nights at The
Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge in Charlotte, North Carolina, a Forbes Four Star
& AAA Four Diamond hotel. We all pursued our own interests while there - my
husband golfed, my son worked out in the fitness center, and I experienced the
Rhythm of Life at The Spa Ballantyne. Read
about my experience.

It
had been over five years since the last
time I visited Nusta Spa in Washington DC. It was noteworthy at that time
for two reasons:
1. Nusta Spa was the first spa to recieve a LEED ("Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design") certification for being green, which was pretty novel
in 2004 for any business and 2. The
massage I recieved from Brad Drummer. I heard there had recently
been some changes at Nusta, so I stopped by for a massage. Read
about my latest experience. ~Julie |
I
experienced The Beauty Cottage while staying at the Schlosshotel
Kronberg in Kronberg, Germany where we were treated like rock stars (literally).

Cottage, my tour of the Rhine River Vally and more.

Toskanaworld
Gmb, the company that owns and operates the Toskana Thermen in Bad
Sulza and in Bad Schandau, will be opening another Toskana
Therme in Bad Orb in May 2010. I was able to take a "hard hat" tour
of the facility in Bad Orb on March 9, 2010 (soft opening planned for May 2).
It looks just as wonderful as the Bad Sulza Toskana Therme. I hope I get an opportunity
to experience it some day. An animated virtual
tour of Toskana Therme Bad Orb, photos
of my tour, information about Toskana
Therme Bad Orb, the Kurhaus
Hotel and the town
of Bad Orb are found in this article.

The
Dorchester Spa in London, England reopened in May 2009 following a comprehensive
six-month, £3.2 million refurbishment. Find out why they would win a "Nice
Touch!" award from me if I were still giving them out. Read about my experience
at The Dorchester Spa. You can
also read about other things I did
in London.

I
thoroughly enjoyed Thermae Bath Spa
in Bath, England and would love to return on a less busy weekday. One of the things
I liked most about this spa was also what I liked least - it's popularity. However,
I find it thrilling to see a spa embraced like this. With Thermae Bath Spa's range
in price points, it is very accessible. Read about my experience at Thermae
Bath Spa.

I
have been interested in spas for over 15 years. Today's spas - both facilities
and treatments - have their foundation in the ancient Roman thermae. I was thrilled
to have an opportunity to visit The
Roman Baths in Bath, England. It is one of the best examples of Roman thermae
that still exists today. Read about my experience at The
Roman Baths. Your can also read about the other things we did in
Bath and near Bath (like
visit Stonehenge).

The
Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix, Arizona wins my award for the most gracious service
I have ever experienced at a hotel or resort. Find out why. Read about my
experience at the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa.~Julie |
My
relationship with spas began at Enchantment Resort 15 years ago when I had my
first massage at the resort's small amenity spa. I was fortunate that my first
massage therapist instructed me how to receive a massage - to quiet my mind, be
in the present moment and to send my breath and energy to the part of my body
being massaged. I had never had those thoughts before. It felt a little other-worldly.
My massage was so profound that it literally changed my life. It ultimately revealed
the first part of my current mission - to share information about spas with others.
Since that visit, the resort built a 24,000 square-foot destination spa,
Mii amo. Read about my first experience
at this wonderful facility in this exceptional location.

It's
not very often that I am totally surprised by a spa, but Toppers
Spa at Dover Downs Hotel and Casino did just that. There was a very nice surprise
and a not-so-nice surprise.
First, the nice... Read about my
experience. ~Julie |

You can clean your home, fruits, vegetables and meats with the same 'Aqueous Ozone' that spas and other companies use. Tersano's ‘Aqueous Ozone’ Cleaning Systemt is the world's most effective chemical-free cleaner. ‘Aqueous Ozone’ quickly oxidizes (kills) viruses and bacteria (including E.coli, Salmonella, MRSA, C-Difficil), mold, mildew and other contaminants on any item or surface - from toilets to bedspreads - before changing safely back into water and oxygen. ‘Aqueous Ozone’ is 3000 times faster and 50% more powerful than bleach and chlorine-based cleaners. It is 100% chemical free - no toxins, carcinogens or chemical residue - and safe for babies, pets and people with sensitive skin or those with strong reactions to normal cleaners. ‘Aqueous Ozone’ has long been used in water treatment, food sterilization and medical therapies for its remarkable anti-viral, and anti-fungal properties. It sounds too good to be true, but the data show how effective the system works.
I'm a believer.
